La Spezia is situated in the eastern part of Liguria, in the middle of a deep natural gulf. The city rises on a narrow land between sea and mounts, and is characterized by its luminous houses on the sea. The palaces, indeed, let us understand how the city developped in the second half of the 19th century, that is, when the great Marine Military Shipyard was built. But the territory of La Spezia and the surrounding lands were inhabited already from ancient times.
Today La Spezia has museums and monuments, among which we remember the Archaeological Museum, the Museum "Amedeo Lia", the Museum "G. Podenzana" and the Center of Modern and Contemporary Art. Among the churches, the Church of Nostra Signora della Neve, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and the Cathedral of Christ, that dominates the central Piazza Europa, deserve a visit. And then, the numerous and ancient palaces, the beautiful Civic Theatre, the Public Gardens, full of several botanical species.
In La Spezia, moreover, there are every year numerous exhibitions, among which the evocative Palio del Golfo, in which all the towns of the Gulf of the Poets challenge one against each other.
