Sestri Ponente

This city is called Sestri Ponente because, in roman age, it was six (sextum) miles away from the main city and it was an industrial place, then included in the city of Genoa. Sestri is an ancient village of fishermen, of boats manufacturers and peasants; today its territory is occupied by factories and important shipyards, while the part of the sea in front of the city is occupied by the airport. Its transformation from small agricultural, seafaring and touristic center to an industrial city coincides with the development of the shipbuilding between the end of the 19th century and the First World War.

To take a walk in the city, we start from via Sestri (the former via Garibaldi, as the elders still call it), that is the main way, recently restored, it has become the center of the shopping. Moreover you will be able to visit evocative churches (as the Basilica of Nostra Signora dell'Assunta and the church of the Natività di Maria e San Nicola da Tolentino) and ancient palaces.
