The historical center, whose original nucleus is dated to the 13th century, is situated the valley of the river Rio Maggiore, the old Rivus Major from which the village takes the name. Here we can visit the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, the Oratorio dei Disciplinati of the 16th century, and, where now there is the cemetary, once there was the old castle, built between the 15th and the 16th century.

Riomaggiore is in the Natural Park of Cinque Terre, and is a marine reserve with many rare animals; therefore, beyond to the beaches and to a charming sea, there is the possibility of diving, in order to admire the submarine world. Between the several activities to practice, the trekking: here there are beautiful paths, among which the Via dell'Amore, a path that goes along the coast, with unforgettable panoramas, and connects the town to Manarola.
