Lerici

Situated on the Gulf of the Poets, Lerici rises in the center of a small natural creek; it has ancient origins, and it was an important harbour where travellers and pilgrims rested before to start walking on the Via Francigena to Rome.

The town is dominated by a cape on which rises the castle, considered one of the most beautiful of Liguria, imposing and compact, rare model of Italian architecture of the Middle Ages, that today is center of the Museo Geopaleontologico.

Lerici still has a medieval structure, characterized by the houses along the narrow roads(carruggi). In the historical center, you can visit the Church of San Rocco and the parish Church of San Francesco, but Lerici is not only its village. Nearly in front of the town, beyond the hamlet Venere Azzurra, there is the hamlet of San Terenzo, very picturesque, with a castle; it is famous because here Percy B. Shelley and his wife Mary spent a period of their life. Further on there is Tellaro, typical seaside village, where still you can see today the boats on the piazzetta and the colourful houses of the fishermen. Here we find the old church of San Giorgio, on the sea, and Villa Cochrane, also known as Villa Rezzola, with a park of eucalyptuses and cypresses.
