Castelnuovo Magra

Castelnuovo Magra is an ancient village, founded between 1187 and 1203, when a lot of inhabitants of Luni abandoned their city moving on the mount Bastione, a hill that degrades towards the plain of the river Magra.

The position between vineyards and forests allows the inhabited center to have a wonderful panoramic view, from the Gulf of the Poets to the inner valleys; some days, when the sky is clear, you can see the islands of Gorgona and Capraia, and if you are lucky the Corsica, too.

The village is full of history and works of art, among which the church of Santa Maria Maddalena; but Castelnuovo is known above all for its Castle, residence of the bishops of Luni. Of the building, dated to the 12th century, today there are imposing ruins. Here Dante Alighieri in 1306 came to negotiate the peace between Francesco Malaspina, Lord of Lunigiana, and the Bishop of Luni. Every year an historical re-enactment remembers this fact.
